Filipina Dating – How Well Can She Speak English

 

Have you ever thought about Filipina dating but been unsure? Dating a beautiful Asian girl, even marrying her could be the experience of a lifetime.  But Asia is so far away and do they even speak my language?  And what about religion?  Would your family disown you if you don’t marry a Christian girl?

If these questions are rushing around your head, stop for a moment.  Take a deep breath in and relax.   Good.  Now that you have an open mind about what waits for you in your future we can talk about these issues.

First, if you think that Filipino women cannot speak fluent English, then you are totally wrong. The Philippines is one of the countries in the world that speaks English as a first or second language.  If you travel there, you could be mistaken for thinking that many educated Filipinos speak with a slight American accent (which is why they are very popular is call centers). This is primarily due to the American influence on this country through most of the 20th century.  For example, U.S. naval base in Subic bay was the largest US Navy installation in the Pacific and the largest overseas military installation of the US armed forces after Clark Air base was closed in Angeles City in 1991.  Don’t be too surprised to learn that your prospective father in-law is actually a US citizen.

American influence in this count actually began about 100 years ago.  The most notable event was the Philippine-American war in 1899-1902.  The war and occupation established English as the primary language of government and business.  This beautiful country achieved independence in 1946 and English had been around long enough that it was there to stay.

Since then, English is taught in school as early as kindergarten as well as the home. This continues through their education through elementary and secondary schools as well as university. In fact, English is still the officially sanctioned language in the country aside from Filipino half a century after independence. Similarly, the influence of Western taste in music, pictures, culture and television shows also makes a contribution to Filipinos’ English abilities. The excellent ability of English language makes the Filipinos competitive in the global market for support workers (hence my comment about call centers earlier).

So, to answer your question – don’t worry about Filipina dating and being able to talk to each other.  Your Filipino girl will probably be able to speak your language better than you.
